Prof Gianluca Gambarini (Italy) - Full-time Professor of Endodontics, University of Rome, La Sapienza, Dental School. Head of the Endodontic Department - Vice Dean of Dental Hygienist School University of Rome, La Sapienza, Dental School  - International lecturer and researcher, - Author of more than 450 scientific articles, three books and chapters in other books. - lecturer (more than 350 presentations) and main speaker in the most important international (AAE, IFEA, ESE) and national endodontic congresses in Europe, North and South America, Asia, Middle East, Australia and South Africa. - Focused his interests on endodontic materials and clinical endodontics, and he is active in cooperating with manufacturers in developing new technologies. - Maintains a private practice in Rome.   Endodontic therapy in 3D     The lecture will address the problem how to shape , clean and obturate canals in three dimensions. The anatomy of root canals, in fact, is mainly oval, while current instruments and techniques are designed to work ideally in round canals. Therefore some changes in the operative techniques and/or in the endodontic instruments must be done while preparing oval canals. The importance of cutting both while reaching the working length and while removing the instrument from the canal will be illustrated. Moreover the lecture will explain the need for increasing the amount of canal walls touched by the instruments, the need for enhanced cleaning and disinfecting procedures, the importance of maintaining original path and avoid iatrogenic errors,and  the correct selection of tapers and tip sizes. Following these principles, a novel approach to  root canal instrumentation will be presented, in attempt to optimize performance and simplify procedures. The most recent advancement in 3d technology (CBCT)  and their possible use in endodontics will be illustrated. At the end a comparison between cold and warm obturation technique, showing their different behaviour in round and oval canals will be made, suggesting clinical hints for a correct choice of techniques and materials, and how to increase quality of the three-dimensional filling
